ToggleWhat does “Vintage Perfumes” Smell Like?

What does it even mean to smell like old money? The term “old money” refers to a type of sophistication, a timelessness, associated with families or individuals who have maintained their wealth over generations. An old money man smells established, he’s in charge, and he isn’t going anywhere.
Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum (2017)

So, the first fragrance on this list is relatively new, having been released in 2017. That being said, it’s got old money credentials because it’s based on a fragrance released in 1966 that transformed the men’s cologne world. Now, that 1966 release is Dior’s Eau Sauvage. Not to be confused with the modern Sauvage line. No, the Eau Sauvage line became legendary due to its introduction of a mix of citrus with lavender with a nice clean woody base.
Considered a masterpiece fragrance, this was a staple worn by the rich and famous. Tons of well-to-do men consider this their signature scent. All that said, the fragrance I’m recommending is the Eau Sauvage Fragrance #1 Flanker that came out in 2017 Parfum. I’ve made a dent in this bottle; I love it. The accords are perfect for summer, with citrus, aromatic, fresh spicy woody, lavender accords, and earthy notes. Elegant, modern, fresh, versatile—this is a signature-worthy scent that definitely screams vintage perfumes.
Chanel Egoist

The next in the list of vintage perfumes is from the House of Chanel. And, no, it’s not going to be Bleu de Chanel, the EDT, the EDP, the Parfum, all of which are amazing fragrances, but a bit overused. It’s not going to be Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme or anything in the Allure line, which is also fine. Chanel doesn’t make a bad fragrance.
I’m going back to Chanel’s 1990 release, Egoist. This is a unique, beautiful, absolute masterpiece. If you want a velvety, woody, spicy floral blend, this is the fragrance for you. Timeless, unique, sophisticated, and with good longevity. For a younger guy in his 20s or 30s, this is one classic fragrance that can help you stand out.
Vintage Perfumes Notes: Citrus, Woods, and Spices
If asked what notes I expect in an old money type of fragrance, I’d list seven. The first is citrus—notes like bergamot, lemon, grapefruit. Invigorating and fresh, they give a feeling of cleanliness. Two fragrances with a nice citrus note at the top: Dunhill Icon and John Varvatos’ Artisan Pure. Both are solid summer scents with good longevity and cool unique bottles, and each is safe for a blind buy. If shopping in-store, check out Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue line, specifically Italian Love, with a strong, realistic grapefruit opening. It’s a beautiful fragrance and relatively affordable.
Dolce & Gabbana “The One”

Since we’re on the Dolce & Gabbana line, I’ll add The One. This is a very popular fragrance for a reason. It exudes class and is suited for cooler months. The accords make sense: warm spicy, amber, tobacco, aromatic, citrus, sweet woody notes. Naturally, a darker, heavier fragrance like this suits cold weather, though the spice and wood can make this a one of the best vintage perfumes.
Tom Ford Tobacco Oud

When talking woody fragrances, think cedar, sandalwood, pines, and vetiver. Wood notes often add warmth and depth associated with elegance. Two woody fragrances: Tom Ford’s Tobacco Oud. A classic, perhaps pushing the edge, but an old money fragrance. If it’s too much, Burberry’s Hero Eau de Parfum is a good alternative, with smooth woody notes at the base.
F by Ferragamo

With spicy notes, some classic men’s fragrances use them to signal robustness. But beware of fragrances that overuse pepper, cardamom, or cinnamon, as they can be overpowering. Would I recommend Spice Bomb Extreme as an old money fragrance? Maybe. For a fresh, spicy fragrance wearable in summer, check out F by Ferragamo. It’s a fresh spicy lavender amber fruity leather aromatic green fragrance, fresh and clean with a pepper note.
Green Notes: Creed Green Irish Tweed and Polo Green
Classic gentlemen’s fragrances often include green, herbaceous notes like lavender, rosemary, and clary sage. Two fragrances fit this description: Creed’s Green Irish Tweed and Polo Green. Green Irish Tweed is an invigorating blast of fresh green. Masculine and well-loved since 1985, it’s a one of the top vintage perfumes. Polo Green, released in 1978, is another classic, though more fall/winter-focused.
Tom Ford Beau De Jour and No 89 Floris
For something different, consider Tom Ford Beau De Jour, a modern old money scent that’s often overlooked. No 89 Floris is another classic. Popular among fans of Ian Fleming, this fragrance has been around but is relatively unknown unless you’re a James Bond fan.
Vetiver Fragrances

Vetiver is a classic scent. Two excellent vetiver options are Creed’s original for a smooth experience or Guerlain’s Vetiver for an affordable choice from a classic French house.
Earthy Notes: Hermès H24 Eau de Parfum and Gucci Guilty Absolute
The last set of notes is earthy ones like Vetiver and oak moss. Hermès’ H24 Eau de Parfum has dominant oak moss notes, though the EDT has a metallic smell. For an earthy vibe, try Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Homme, an earthy old-school fragrance that’s understated but gets compliments.
